After several months of procrastination, Patrick Pouyanné has chosen a replacement for Arnaud Breuillac, the group’s number two. Breuillac, head of the exploration and production (E&P) division, has reached retirement age. Nicolas Terraz, who has been piloting this branch in sub-Saharan Africa since July 2019, will replace him.

For the first time, it is an African, Henri-Max Ndong Nzue from Gabon, who will succeed Terraz in this position at the end of September. However, Nzue, a graduate of the Ecole Polytechnique—like Pouyanné and Terraz—comes from the marketing and services division (M&S), whereas they came from exploration and production. The Gabonese engineer, who joined the group in 1991, has spent most of his career in the E&P division, mainly in the group’s subsidiary in Libreville from 2009 to 2013, as strategy and business director, and then from 2015 to 2019 as managing director. Since then, Nzue joined the marketing and services (M&S) division of TotalEnergies, where he served as corporate secretary and director for the American continents.

At the same time, three new TotalEnergies E&P country managers have taken up positions on the continent, in Mozambique and Uganda—where the oil company is running its two largest extractive projects in Africa—and in Congo-Brazzaville. The Portuguese-speaking Frenchman Maxime Rabilloud, former head of Total E&P in Brazil and Angola, takes over from Ronan Bescon in Maputo. Philippe Groueix, previously head of Denmark, replaced Pierre Jessua in Kampala, and Nicolas Wawresky succeeded Martin Deffontaine in Brazzaville.

There are no changes at the top of the other two large African E&P subsidiaries: Nigeria, headed by the British Mike Sangster, and Angola, managed by Olivier Jouny.

It is worth noting that Breuillac and Jessua are leaving their operational responsibilities but not altogether leaving the group, as they have been appointed advisors to Patrick Pouyanné.
