Habibo, the Malagasy family-owned food group headed by Malik Karmaly, has finalised the takeover of the ten supermarkets owned by the South African retailer on the Big Island, which will now be operated under the U shops banner.

Bertrand Gardès, director of Sytème U in the south of the country from 2005 to 2015, has spent the last two years working to bring Habibo and the French cooperative grouping together to develop a retail branch on Madagascan territory. As part of the takeover of Shoprite‘s shops, a commercial partnership was signed between Habibo and Système U, as previously announced by Africa Business+.
