EIB acts as fire-fighter for São Tomé’s €14m drinking water network modernisation

The European institution is almost entirely financing the renovation of the capital’s water distribution and production facilities operated by EMAE, the water and electricity company of the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe. Apart from facing a problematic deficit situation, the public company is amidst a governance crisis.

Under appraisal since 2020, finance from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to upgrade the drinking water network in São Tomé, the capital and principal city of the São Tomé and Príncipe archipelago, was approved on 31 December 2022 by the Board of Directors of the Luxembourg-based bank.
