Portia Derby, new CEO of Transnet and former high-ranking official
On the hunt for a new leader for the past year and a half, the South African rail company has turned to a former director of state-owned companies.

With her MBA from the University of the Witwatersrand and a Master’s degree in Economics from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Portia Derby began her career at the National Institute for Economic Policy (NIEP) as a researcher in macroeconomics, before joining the Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP), which was launched in 1994. She was one of the founders of the National Investment and Trade Promotion Agency from 1997 to 2001 and went on to become CEO.
