Financing for the more than $4 billion hydrocracking complex was closed in 2012 before the entire project required a total turnaround, which was completed in late 2019.

Egyptian Refining Company (ERC)’s new complex, currently being delivered by Mitsui & Co and GS Engineering & Construction in Mostorod, 20 kilometres northeast of Cairo, is of strategic importance for the country. By the end of the first quarter of 2020, it will cover between 30% and 35% of Egypt’s diesel needs and will significantly reduce the amount the country spends on fuel imports.
