Covid-19 threatens to slow bank merger activity in Kenya

Since the recent lifting of certain regulatory restrictions, the outlook for Kenya’s banking sector appeared to be improving before the pandemic began to spread and falling market capitalisations heightened uncertainty.

“Due to this pandemic-related financial crisis, even transactions which already fulfilled all prerequisites could be abandoned if the funds have not yet been transferred, at the risk of paying out an abandonment penalty,” an executive from an investment bank in Nairobi told Jeune Afrique Business+, adding that he is concerned about the longevity of private equity investments.
