As a result of this transaction—covered by Jeune Afrique Business+ on 24 August 2020—a group of employees at the mine initiated proceedings last year before the Ghanaian courts to claim the payment of severance payments because they would lose their jobs as a result of the sale. Golden Star Resources (GSR) rigorously defended this accusation by pointing out that no layoffs occurred since the deal was concluded on 30 September 2020. The London-based mining company won the first round on 16 February, but the employees appealed the decision on 26 March.
