Trafigura aims to secure its supply of cobalt by targeting Gécamines’ Entreprise Générale du Cobalt

While Gécamines, the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) national copper and cobalt producer, wants to improve how it manages artisanal (hand-mined) cobalt production, the Swiss trading and logistics giant is in talks for taking a financial stake in the state-owned company’s new initiative.

Trafigura is discussing an $80 to $100 million investment with Gécamines. The investment would be used by Entreprise Générale du Cobalt (EGC) to purchase cobalt from independent producers.
