Spotify was only operating in Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, South Africa and Tunisia up to a week ago. New countries, notably Nigeria and East Africa, are now on the development agenda. The Swedish group details out the specificities of the African market in terms of payment or connectivity. It says local content will take priority on the musical segments and on the podcasts.

Phiona Okumu has been recently been appointed to Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa at Spotify. Former artist press officer for 22tracks and founder of Afripop magazine, she worked between 2016 and 2019 for Apple as editor and label relations manager for iTunes and Apple Music.
