Freeport Saldanha CEO Kaashifah Beukes: “For the development of green hydrogen, export contracts will be a key catalyst for funding”
The Saldanha Bay industrial development zone is set to become a major hub for green hydrogen and its derivatives in South Africa. Steelmaker ArcelorMittal and petrochemical company Sasol recently signed a joint development agreement (JDA) to decarbonise the ArcelorMittal Saldanha Bay (AMSA) plant, using hydrogen produced from renewable energy.

The plant was shut down in 2020, but plans to restart in 2023. The agreement also includes exploring the potential for exporting hydrogen and green steel.
Kaashifah Beukes is CEO of Freeport Saldanha Industrial Development Zone (formerly the Saldanha Bay Industrial Development Zone – SBIDZ), is South Africa’s first free port, located approximately 90km north of Cape Town, and is dedicated to the maritime services and manufacturing, energy, logistics and engineering industries.
