When the IFC rescues the City of Johannesburg’s budget 

In an unusual operation, the World Bank subsidiary will support the South African city, which is experiencing recurrent financing difficulties.

The move is unusual for the financing institution, which usually supports the private sector. The International Finance Corporation (IFC) will help the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality’s (COJ) 2022-2023 budget programme with a 15-year loan of R1.83 billion ($100 million).
