Tunisia: Orange Group still eager to take control of its subsidiary despite regulatory reluctance

For 11 years almost to the day, the Orange Group has been hoping to take control of its Tunisian subsidiary. The telecommunications giant led by Stéphane Richard remains patient, but irritation is clearly being felt.

“We are confident that we will resume discussions [with the Tunisian authorities] after the end of Ramadan [the Eid el-Fitr festivities marking the end of Ramadan took place on 26 May in Tunisia], which also coincides with the end of the lockdown in Tunisia,” the Orange Group replied by email on 26 May to questions from Jeune Afrique Business+. These discussions concern the French operator’s desire to become the main shareholder of Orange Tunisia, as envisaged in the shareholders’ agreement signed on 20 May 2009.
