German Hapag-Lloyd’s acquisition of the Dutch company also allows the world No.5 in containers to close the gap with the top trio of Maersk, MSC and CMA CGM. These three still dominate the West African market though.

Independent shipowners are disappearing from Africa in favour of global carriers. NileDutch follows the same fate as French Delmas and British Otal, absorbed by CMA CGM, and the Belgian-South African Safmarine, taken over by Maersk and several other African service specialists. Their names, initially retained, have now disappeared.
