Niger’s Ibrahim Yacouba launches tender for 50 MW solar unit at Sonichar
Niger’s Minister of State for Energy and Renewable Energies is promoting a project to increase the capacity of the country’s historic Sonichar coal-fired power station.

Located near Arlit, the country’s uranium-producing region, the plant provides 13% of the total electricity generated, which still has a deficient level of electrification and mainly depends on imports from neighbouring Nigeria. Société nigérienne du charbon is a major supplier to the mines of Orano, which now only counts the SOMAÏR mine which has just signed a new partnership agreement with the authorities to extend its operations until 2040. Indeed, the neighbouring Cominak mine recently ceased production.
